Locked cage, open window
He was a finch within his locked little cage
He flew away from it never before
His life within has always been quiet and safe
Though he's always stared through the open window
Flying out into the breeze
A strange intoxicating dream
His caretaker provided him everything
That he could ever need
Food, water, shelter, friendship
A companion in every scene
When in pain he was tended to
A doctor to oversee
Locked cage, open window
The constant struggle between
The need to be safe
And the need to be set free
He's safe and sound within the cage
His wings yearn to flutter
He wishes he could go visit another
One of his kind
He daydreams often
But reality is not the same as what he has in mind
He flutters within and excitedly sings
Whenever his caretaker is near
He wishes for nothing more
Than their love and warmth
For with them he feels no fear
He knows no hunger or thirst
He knows no need for shelter when the cold is at its worst
The finch still despite it all wants
To be set free
Outside the borders of the house
Within he's lived all his years
You see, his caretaker found him
Wounded and broken
His parents died early and
He fell out of his nest
So the caretaker took him in
Did everything to revive his soul
The finch once was broken
Now thanks to the caretaker, he is whole
But the caretaker knows not
About the desires of their little bird friend
The caretaker only knows
To give love and care
The finch wishes to leave
He knows he'll return
In his mind he believes
It's not like he'll abandon them
They're his friend, his caregiver
The one with which he belongs
But he's still young, he's taken no lover
And yet, the caretaker is why he's grown so strong
So torn between
Locked cage, open window
He decides he'll stay
There's no reason to fly away
There's no reason to betray the trust
That which the caretaker has put within him
He does not need to abandon love
For his figmented imagination of freedom
The risk isn't worth it, he tells himself
One day he'll have to go anyways
For his caretaker can never hold onto him forever
At least that's what he thinks
But they've abandoned him never
So he knows his thoughts' truth does not ring
But he believes them anyways
For what is freedom with no companionship
What is life without friends
Where would he find shelter when the storms come loud
When he could hide with her till the morn arrives sound
Songbird as he is, he sings happy and free
For he has chosen to stay and it is his freedom that leads
Him to choose
He would never have a choice had he been kept prisoner
Locked cage that opens often
Open window but when it rains it closes
Caretaker he loves and cherishes
A house in which he flutters happily
When he's older yet maybe the caretaker will take him
Outside to play together
He's still young after all
But within his heart he knows
He'll never leave them alone
