Little lamb

 Come along little lamb
Follow in my footsteps
I'll cover our tracks
Come, my dearest friend
My only companion on this road
Shelter me from the night
I'll shelter you from the wolves
Let us lay in the dark
Sleep, not much to be said
Carrying everything on our shoulders
Our backs about to break
Let us be free
Be not afraid
I am your gentle caretaker
Your valiant protector
You're my sweet prayer
The touch that lingers
For all my ghosts
All those I've lost
You soothe
You're out of place
I'm out of touch
Confused
Together, we rule
A kingdom of fools
A throne we both refused
Thrust upon us
We have no clue
For what reasons we carry
This burning burden
Bruising out hands
Burn scars on our fingers
We don't yet understand
So while you pray and hope
I'll keep an open eye
I will watch our roads
For anything that isn't benign
Don't you leave my side
Don't you try and go away
I've lost enough as is
I'm afraid
I promise I will be yours
For as long as I live
How, you made me soft
While with the whole world I'm stiff
Never have I ever thought
For as I long as I've lived
That I'd have you, little lamb
And I must confess
If I have to sacrifice myself
To save this world from itself
I would do so in a heartbeat
But if it was your life that's on the line
So God help me, my dear
I will let it all burn
For it is a far, far better thing
That I do, than I've ever done
It is a far, far better rest
That I go to, than I've ever gone
Hand in hand, together till the end
And even so beyond
I'll protect you, and ease your pain
And I know you'd do the same
For everyone had us always to blame
But for each other
Together, we can breathe
Be free
Apart...

Today is the fifth week from the darkest night The king remains bed-ridden I must attend to more and more Of matters for which I care not But my king's orders are to be followed He knows best after all I follow him best I can To know, to learn For one day I will lead these people too His son is long-gone, and no heir apparent remains He claims his son will return But I know that's just an old man's hopeful tale The king's wise, calm and secure But he calculates oh so poor It's why I'm here For every time he steps into the streets Someone could make an attempt on his life So I ensure the streets are clear I ensure his safety's paramount always And yet sometimes he evades my gaze He sneaks out and is always safe I will never understand the gift this man possesses...
