Opaque

 Hiding behind masks
We think they're opaque
To our old identities we're attached
Our masks are transparent, and fake
And anyone who dares unmask us, we attack
Leaving our real selves hidden, vague
In the night, we crack
We've made oh so many mistakes
That's not an opinion, it's a fact
And that fact, oh so many of us it breaks
Knowing what we could've become
Knowing what could've been
Knowing what we have done
Knowing the darkness within
In the night we walk naked
Lay in bed undressed
Our truths are clearly visible
As we finally choose to rest
Our masks are not opaque
They're as transparent as our souls
But people hide behind masks
Of their own
Makes everyone blind to the truth
Of everybody else
And oh I rue the day
That I learned about this ruse
We're all a part of a play
Telling lies, playing roles
But leaving for the truth some clues
And closing the door on our past, we won't
For we are deeply hurt and bruised
Learning from our mistakes, we don't
For our minds are busy being used
To maintain that mask that we think is opaque
Maintain that guise that is so clearly fake
Try and convince the world we're not who we are
Get stuck in a loop of consuming our own fire
Fly and fly in our imagination, oh so far
Trying to imagine us following our own desires
And yet we never do
So what gives?
To tell you the truth
Honesty is what's amiss
And so we talk to each other
Ask about how our days have went
And we lie and lie and lie
About us being content
But that is just the truth of life
And the lies we lie, are first to ourselves
Because the truth is oh so rife
So we'd rather convince our inner selves
That the days have went by
Calm and beautiful, and that we're not malcontent
So take off your mask, my dear child
And be free once and for all
Let the shackles crackle as they hit the ground
Let what's holding you back fall
