Behind the masks
As my eyes dart through the room
They uncover roses pretending to bloom
People smiling and laughing
Hiding their problems behind a mask
They themselves question their actions
"To what end?" is what they ask
Pretending to enjoy themselves, lying
Trying their best to believe their tale
Hiding in the shadows, reminiscing and crying
Hiding their feelings deep within a dale
When surrounded by the crowds they smile
As if they have something to prove
They laugh and dance, all the while
A grey cloud is, essentially, their roof
They look inside and feel empty
What a lost soul they have become
Unaware of what they are as an entity
Scared to brave the future to come
So they hang on tight clinging to things
That give them a sense of familiarity
Regardless of whether these things hurt or sting
Cherishing their blindness to clarity
They refuse to cleanse themselves of their pasts
They deny that they're unhappy at all
They sell and sell their little lie
And deeper into the abyss, they fall
What wicked spell did the witch cast
On humanity what curse is placed
For all the people to turn to husks
Soulless, hopeless and despaired
As if living inside a loop of sorts
No one escapes the norm
Everyone tries their best to believe
That they could brave the storm
They dig their graves step by step
Denying they'll ever die
Working for days, saving money
To what end do they try
Getting rich or getting by
In the end they waste their lives
I wonder why
Maybe if they had seen themselves slip away
They'd have noticed their burning passions die out
Maybe if they had noticed their soul giving way
They would have managed to catch it before it flew out
Hold it in it's place and hang on tight
Prepare themselves for the coming ride
Hang along and brave the tides
And bring their faces back from behind the masks
Smile, but genuinely this time
For they for once don't have to lie
Don't have to find a reason why
Don't really have to bother to try
No social standard to uphold
No people that need convincing
For everyone is within themselves whole
And that's a universe left unflinching
